HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The team representing Horry County Fire Rescue at the 2013 Firefighter Combat Challenge World Championships took second place in the competition of firefighter teams from around the globe this past weekend.

Among the 64 relay teams from 10 different countries, "TEAM HORRY" had the fastest time recorded for 2013 of all the teams from around the world during the finals competition, said Team Captain Mike Medeiros. TEAM HORRY also beat all the American teams, including the champions from the national competition earlier this month, and the reigning world champions.

On October 12 and 13, TEAM HORRY took second place in the competition in the nationals relay at the national firefighter competition held in Montgomery, Alabama. They also placed third in the over-40 individual category.

According to the event website, the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge features teams of firefighters in "full bunker gear" completing a series of tasks, including climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses, and rescuing a life-sized, 175-pound "victim" in a race against the clock.

"TEAM HORRY" managed to place second in the nationals competition, in spite of "setbacks, up and down results, and difficulty securing sponsors," according to the HCFR Facebook page. "Not bad for a small SC team to be #2 in the Country!"

After the team's performance in the World Championships, TEAM HORRY has been invited to compete in the pre-game show of the Cotton Bowl in Arlington Stadium on January 3, 2014. This competition will be televised.
