Walton County investigators search for missing Army veteran

WALTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Sheriff's Deputies in Walton County were looking for 42-year-old Travis Dean, after his parents reported him missing last week. Dean served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Bragg in the mid-1990s.

Bill and Karen Dean said their son had not shown any signs of mental illness until late September, around the time they think he came off his prescription medications.

According to his parents, Dean was in recovery from a surgical procedure a year ago, and was required to take medication to remain healthy. They said his erratic behavior started becoming more apparent when he stopped taking his medication.

"Travis was really struggling in the last couple of weeks before he disappeared," said his stepmother Karen.

"This has never happened before and we're concerned immediately for his health," said his father Bill.

Bill and Karen said their son had complained of hearing voices, and took to wandering for miles late at night. The last time anyone saw him was Monday, Oct. 7 alongside Highway 11 at Interstate 20.

Dean's parents believe he was trying to get to the VA Hospital in Decatur.

Anyone who might have information that could be helpful in this case is asked to call the Walton County Sheriff's Department.
