Alabama looking to tighten abortion rules

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WTVM/AP) - State health officials are proposing new rules that would reduce the number of abortions an Alabama doctor can perform without coming under regulation as an abortion clinic.

Currently, state rules define an abortion clinic as any facility that performs 30 or more abortions during any two months in a year. The proposed regulation would define a clinic as any place that performs 10 or more abortions in any single month.

Brian Hale, an attorney for the Alabama Department of Public Health, said the proposal will be considered during a public hearing set for Oct. 29.

Hale says the new rule is partly in response to the state's legal fight to shut down what it claimed was a doctor operating an illegal abortion clinic in Birmingham.
