COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Even though I'm still new to the Columbus area, I have been delighted with all the options we have here for outdoor fun, celebration and community involvement.
Uptown Columbus is one of the most popular venues in the city. If you haven't been there yet, maybe you've seen some of these images on our newscasts.
News Leader 9 covers events big and small, like Arts on the River, Market Days on Broadway, the Friday concert series, and the high quality productions and events at the RiverCenter.
Uptown Columbus is now the setting for a variety of 5K run and walk events-- WTVM even had a team in the "Paint the Town Pink" event against breast cancer.
Some long-time residents tell me they don't venture to uptown very often-- and I tell them they are missing out on wonderful family events.
Luckily, Uptown isn't the only place that's alive in our area.
The National Infantry Museum is a jewel, and there's also the Springer Opera House and Calloway Gardens with its summer concert series.
The Greater Columbus Fair has just been in town.
The Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic and upcoming Fountain City Classic between Fort Valley State and Albany State makes us a magnet for sports fans. Soon, it will be time for the Columbus Cottonmouths hockey team to shine.
The Marching Band Festival, the Beer and Wine Festival, even the Miss Georgia Pageant add to the list of great things to do in our area.
Having so many choices – not to mention our famous WhiteWater Rafting course – gives us so many good options for families to spend time together, and it plays a big part in giving the Columbus area its reputation as a great place to live.
Supporting these often free events makes a statement that you like what the community has to offer.
When you participate, businesses feel confident, which is what they need to grow. When businesses have confidence, our community becomes even stronger, and that is always something to celebrate!
