Man charged with burning death of his girlfriend

(WMC-TV) - A 57-year-old man is charged with first degree murder after his girlfriend was burned to death Friday night.

Police were flagged down by Gregory Powell, who told them he set his girlfriend on fire at a home on Coleman Road. Officers took Powell into custody while additional officers headed to the scene.

When they arrived at 3509 Coleman Road, officers say they noticed a strong smell of smoke and gas. Upon further investigation, they found a woman in the bathroom of the home with severe burns all over her body.

When Memphis Fire Department arrived, she was pronounced dead.

The woman has not been positively identified.

Powell is charged with first degree murder.
