Cuts coming to food stamp benefits

Posted: Updated:

Millions of Americans will soon see a decrease in their food stamp benefits.

According to the USDA, SNAP benefits will decrease Nov. 1 because a recession-era boost in benefits is ending. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 increased SNAP benefits to help people affected by the recession.

Before the act passed, Alabama had more than 400,000 people in the SNAP program. Now there are about 900,000.

The USDA says a family of four with no changes in circumstances will get $36 less a month.

The average monthly benefits for U.S. households is about $275, according to the USDA. The amount people receive depends on a number of factors like income, household size and expenses.
