Mize Leads, No. 7 Cougars 2nd at TVA Credit Union Invitational

KILLIN, Ala. — With rounds of 296 and 289, the seventh-ranked Columbus State men's golf team sits in second place after the opening day of the TVA Credit Union Invitational. The tournament, hosted by the University of North Alabama, is being played at the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club in Killen, Ala.

The Cougars are nine-over par through two rounds with a team score of 585. No. 13 North Alabama (580) holds a slim five-shot lead heading into the final round. Carson-Newman College (600), the University of Missouri – St. Louis (605) and Delta State University (605) round out the top five.

Following his win at the Aflac/Cougar Invitational, Robert Mize fired the best round of any individual with his second round 67. The five-under par round was three shots better than any other round on the day. Coupled with an even par first round, the sophomore sits atop the leaderboard with a three-stroke lead going into Tuesday's final round.

Also inside the top-10, Yannick Gumowski and Bryan Lichimo are tied for seventh through Monday. Gumowski was four-over par after a first round 76, but bounced back in round two carding an even par 72 to close out his day at four-over. Lichimo posted back-to-back rounds of two-over 74 on his way to four-over for the day.

Senior Cates Culpepper was in good shape after a two-over par 74 in the opening round. However, the Columbus native dropped to eight-over for the tournament with a 78 in round two, Columbus State's drop score for the round. He will enter the final round tied for 24th.

The final member of CSU's team on Monday was James Clayton. The transfer from Truett-McConell College recorded the team's drop score in the first round with a 79 before rebounding in round two contributing a four-over 76 to the team score. The junior is in a tie for 34th heading into Tuesday.

Columbus State will be in the final groupings in Tuesday's final round, paired with North Alabama and Carson-Newman. James Clayton will be the first Cougar to tee off hitting his first shot at 10:30 a.m.
