LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Wednesday marks 30 years since the Beirut barracks bombing in Lebanon. Many people consider the attack the first blast in America's war on terror; 241 Americans died, along with 58 members of the French military.

Most of the Americans killed were Marines, including Amanda Moore's dad. Major William Winter was just 32-years-old when he was killed. Amanda was just 3 1/2 at the time. Major Winter was the supply officer for the Battalion Landing Team stationed in Beirut.

On October 23rd, 1983, a suicide bomber driving a truck full of explosives slammed through security gates and into the barracks that housed the Americans. Moments later, a second truck exploded near the French barracks. Both units were there as part of a peace keeping mission.

Amanda said her dad wrote to her mom everyday. In his letters, he said the troops were tired and ready to come home but,..."that they were determined that they were going to stay as long as they were needed until the mission was completed. And that's what he did."

The bombing was ultimately blamed on the Lebanese Shiite militia, Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran. After the bombing, a U.S. Investigation blamed a lack of security for allowing the terrorist to get into the Marine compound.

Wednesday, survivors and the Marine Corps' top general will mark the anniversary at a ceremony at Camp Lejeune.
