PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An Ahwatukee woman is making sure underprivileged kids in the Valley have a happy Halloween – and she's doing it while battling a debilitating neuromuscular disease.

"This has grown to be something bigger than me, and I couldn't let these kids down," said Sabrina Ramirez.

The single mother of two started Costumes for Kids in 2007.

Ramirez collects donated Halloween costumes all year long and stores them in her garage – until October, when it's time to give them away.

During her first event six years ago, she outfitted 25 children at St. Vincent de Paul in south Phoenix.

In 2012, the number was nearly 700 and 2013 looks to be on par – thanks to a donation from Party City.

"It gives me joy - just their smile," Ramirez said. "They don't even have to say anything."

But it's getting harder for her to give as much as she wants too.

Last year, Ramirez was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis – a neuromuscular, autoimmune disease and will likely have to take a form of chemotherapy for the rest of her life.

Still, she refuses to let her illness prevent her from helping those in need.

"The social worker in me needs to maintain ties to the community," Ramirez said.

Wednesday night, she watched as hundreds of excited kids picked out costumes with the help of theatre students from Mountain Point High School.

Parents called Ramirez an angel and said they appreciate her for making Halloween happen for their children.

"It's a blessing for her to do this for all of these kids that are in need," said Celina Garibaldi. "Even though she's sick, she's doing it still for them."
