CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

Investigators say Jaylen Johnson, 7, of West Point, Ga., was killed when the vehicle his mother was driving traveled off the road and overturned.

Jaylen was not in a safety restraint at the time of the crash.

State Troopers say based on their preliminary investigation, the child unbuckled his seat belt himself. His mother became distracted as she turned her attention to him, and lost control of the vehicle.

Jaylen's mother, Lasonia Johnson, 38, of West Point, Ga., was wearing a seat belt at the time and was not injured.

State troopers and other law enforcement continue to investigating the incident.
