Muscogee, Harris Co. officials suspect fires stretching miles of I-185N were arson

Posted: Updated:

The day after several large fires broke out along I-185N between exits 10 and 26, officials in both Muscogee County and Harris County continue to suspect arson.

All lanes of I-185 are back open between exit 19 and 25 after having been completely shutdown for several hours last night, Oct. 24, due to visibility issues caused by the smoke.

Harris County Public Safety Director David McCall says the area was monitored through the night with no problem, but there may still be a few hotspots.

Muscogee County Fire Marshal Ricky Shores said he believes a series of brush fires that occurred in Harris and Muscogee Counties along the highway are the work of an arsonist.

McCall also suspects arson due to having four separate fires that spread out over miles of the interstate in Harris County alone.

Volunteer firefighters throughout the region put out the flames with the help of bulldozers.

Investigators are looking for information about suspicious activity that anyone may have seen along the interstate near JR Allen Pkwy at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Anyone who witnessed something unusual should contact arson investigators at (706) 329-0025.
