PHOENIX (CBS5) -

With your safety and well-being in mind, your CBS 5 weather team continues to work collaboratively with the National Weather Service.

"We're all in the common mission of protecting the public and getting the word out," said Ken Waters with the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

There's good news when it comes to our recent summer rainy seasons.  Although some of us got more rain than others, statistically, we're coming off of two "good" monsoon seasons with higher than normal precipitation.

Flagstaff had their second highest monsoon season rainfall on record.

Looking back to last year's winter weather, there were two high-impact events.  The hard freeze in late January, and the quick, but hard-hitting snow, particularly in the Scottsdale area.

"That event in particular, the afternoon event, was very localized. The storm that produced it was very small so it only effected a small area. Other parts of the Valley at the same time were sunny," said NWS meteorologist Dan Leins.

For the upcoming winter, there's no clear sign of an el nino or la nina influencing our weather. Long term climate models suggest we'll be a little warmer and drier than average, but don't let that fool you.

"We can be warmer than average over an entire season. But within that season, you're going to have days or weeks that could be cooler than average, you could have a significant snowstorm within that timeframe," said NWS meteorologist Mark O'Malley.
