(WMC-TV) - The Millington Naval Base shooting brought the reality of an active shooter situation closer to home. Would you know what to do if your workplace was attacked?

An expert says there are other steps to take before hiding underneath your desk.

According to a Department of Homeland Security public service video you should escape if there is a way out and take the below steps:

  • Evacuate whether others agree to or not
  • Leave your belongings behind
  • Help others escape if possible
  • Prevent others from entering
  • Call 9-1-1 when you are safe

Experts say if you cannot get away hide then lock and blockade the door, silence your phone, hide behind large objects, remain quiet, and turn off lights

Safety Expert Marti Miller says if you cannot run or hide then be prepared to fight.

"Look around and see what weapons you have. Grab the scissors, grab the stapler," she said. "Take [a] pen shove it up his nasal cavity as far as you can then you rip it out."

Miller says the pen is painful and will draw the shooters hands to his pain and away from you.

She says find whatever heavy objects you can and hit the shooter's arm that is holding the gun to disable him.

Among those tips Miller also says you can hit the shooter in the knee cap with a strong object to break it. She says one of the most important tips is being quiet. Also, Miller says ladies should immediately take off high heels so you can run, plus heels can make a lot of noise.
