CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

The driver of a pickup truck that smashed into a vehicle injuring three children in Chandler has been sentenced.

As part of the plea deal, Judge Jo Lynn Gentry sentenced Nathan Painter to 10 years in prison and five years of probation for two counts of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an injury collision.

Painter was traveling westbound on Ray Road approaching Arrowhead Drive when he apparently lost control and left the roadway on Oct. 26, Chandler Police Department spokesman Joe Favazzo said.

The truck proceeded over a sidewalk, through some shrubbery and down into a retention basin. It then traveled out of the retention basin and became airborne into the northbound lane of Arrowhead Drive, Favazzo said.

The truck collided with the rear passenger window of a car driving northbound on Arrowhead Driver from Ray Road, Favazzo said.

The impact of the collision caused the car to roll over two times in the roadway and land on all four wheels.

The 61-year-old driver of the car still had her foot on the accelerator, and the car crossed the roadway and landed in a retention basin, Favazzo said.

The driver of the truck fled the scene. Witnesses chased the suspect through the neighborhood where Painter came to a stop, according to Favazzo.

The other occupants of the car included two 3-year-old boys and one 2-year-old girl. The three children were in child safety seats.

The two boys suffered severe injuries, while the girl and the driver reported minor injuries.

Painter's girlfriend was in the front passenger seat of the truck and was also injured during the collision. Speed and impairment are factors in this crash, Favazzo said.

Painter was booked on multiple aggravated assault, endangerment and hit-and-run charges, including aggravated DUI.
