BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Various groups gathered at Kelly Ingram Park on Monday to blast Governor Robert Bentley's decision not to expand Medicaid coverage in Alabama.

The Birmingham Metro Chapter of the NAACP, Greater Birmingham Ministries and Progressive Democrats of America accused Bentley of hurting the healthcare of some Alabamians.

The group pointed to a UAB study which said 300,000 people would be added to Medicaid coverage, adding jobs and money to Alabama if Bentley agreed to the expansion under the Affordable Healthcare Act.

Bentley has refused to go along with the expansion, saying the Medicaid system is broken in Alabama and must be fixed first. Bentley is also concerned about the state's cost as the program continues in the future.

The Rev. Anthony Johnson with the Metro NAACP accused Bentley of being the modern day Governor George Wallace standing in the door of healthcare.

The group plans to have another rally and demonstration at Kelly Ingram Park on Nov. 29.
