BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Police say a Birmingham woman was driving drunk when she wrecked an SUV, killing a 10-year-old boy who was riding inside.

Sherita Harvey, 34, was driving a 2005 GMC Envoy when she ran off Vanderbilt Road and crashed around 12:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, according to Birmingham police. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

When officers got to the crash scene on the property of Brother's Recycling, two adults and four children were hurt.

Their investigation shows that the SUV crashed through the business's fencing, hit a concrete ramp and then flipped.

Ten-year-old Rashaad Cole was ejected from the SUV and died at the scene. He was staying with friends where were also in the car, along with his friends' mom, another friend and their mother.

Terry Billups, a Brothers Recycling employee, rushed to the scene after hearing about the accident.

"It was very bad," he said. "The doors [of the SUV] were off, the car was on its side."

Billups says he also saw Cole at the scene. He says the 10-year-old was wearing pajamas.

"I just couldn't...I just left," Billups said. "I couldn't take it. It's just sad because you never think it would happen right here where you work."

Police say Harvey appeared to be intoxicated when they arrived to the scene. They later learned that she and the female passenger had stopped at more than one nightclub and had been drinking before the accident.

Sgt. Johnny Williams says police believe the women left the four children, ages 2, 3, 8 and 10, in the vehicle while they stopped at the nightclubs.

"We believe she made two stops at nightclubs. One particular nightclub she stopped at she went inside and left the kids in the car. The accident occurred after leaving that bar," Williams said.

Williams says that one of the children belongs to Harvey, two belonged to the female passenger, and Cole was left in the care of the female passenger that night.

"You had another adult who trusted another female to take care of her child. She lost her child in the process. It's tragic," Williams said.

The children and the other woman in the car are expected to recover from their injuries. The female passenger was also ejected and had to have an arm amputated.

Williams says investigators believe no one in the SUV was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Harvey has been charged with murder with reckless indifference, first degree assault, aggravated child abuse and three counts of felony child abuse. She is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a bond of $305,000.

The female passenger has not been charged with anything, according to Williams, but he adds that DHR is conducting their own investigation.

Reporter Sherea Harris will have more on this story online at 9 and on air after baseball.
