BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Fraternal Cemetery in Pratt City has markers that date back to the 1800s. However, the condition of the grounds are showing their age.

Shirley Vines Butler has family buried at the cemetery and says up to 12 fraternal organizations maintained the cemetery at one point.

But now, she says crime in the area and poor maintenance have damaged the cemetery.

"The land it still deeded tot he fraternal organizations but there's nobody left [from the organizations]," she said. "It was very disheartening to see the condition it was in."

But one group is still fighting for the cemetery's care. If you would like to help with clean up efforts, please contact the Fraternal Greenwood Foley Cemetery Preservation Society at 205-491-2494 or 205-999-6810.

The group is also in desperate need of a portable monument lifter.
