Convicted murderer sentenced to life in prison

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A convicted murderer was back in a Smith County courtroom on Monday, this time being sentenced to life in prison.

In 1991, 46-year-old Richard Hartsfield was sentenced to 40 years in prison for murder. He was out on parole when he was arrested again on drug and weapons charges.

According to the district attorney's office, Hartsfield had 13 grams of cocaine on him in a drug-free zone, and was in possession of two stolen firearms and a silencer.

Monday evening, it took a Smith County jury a matter of minutes to hand down the sentence.

Hartsfield had 18 years left on his sentence when he was paroled. He will have to serve the balance of that sentence before he begins the life sentence.
