MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley's office is releasing information on 71 candidates who have submitted applications for the position of president of Alabama State University.

The release comes amid protests from members of the ASU Board who say the documents are confidential. The governor's office says the applications are public documents and should be made available to the public.

The document is a redacted version that does not include the name of any of the 71 candidates. However, the document lists the candidates' highest degree, last employment and items of concern to the search committee.

The documents show a range of concerns regarding many of the candidates including past lawsuits, votes of no confidence, limited executive experience, bankruptcies, criminal allegations and other issues. Several candidates had no items of concern.

The governor's office and ASU are at odds over whether the search should be halted until issues raised by a preliminary audit that casts allegations of waste, mismanagement and possible wrongdoing are addressed.

ASU has said the search will continue and the list of 71 candidates has been reduced to eleven finalists.
