One dead, one injured after shooting on Benning Drive

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Columbus Police are investigating a homicide that occurred late Tuesday night.

The incident happened in the 1000 block of Benning Drive.

Dior Cheney, 23, of Macon, Ga. was found inside a car, apparently shot to death. Witnesses said they heard between twelve and fifteen gunshots.

Detectives secured the crime scene near the corner of Head St. and examined the area where a car crashed into a fence.

Columbus Police say Travis Porter, 32, of Columbus, Ga. was also hurt in the shooting but his condition is unknown at this time. Porter is currently at the hospital in ICU in unsatisfatory condition.

The sight of the deceased victim caused one bystander in the gathering crowd to faint.  Paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene to treat her for injuries she sustained in the fall.

This incident marks the 19th homicide in Columbus this year.

Cheney's body is being sent to Atlanta for an autopsy.

We will continue to bring you the latest on this fatal shooting as more information becomes available.
