Judge orders release of full surveillance footage in Kendrick Johnson death investigation

Posted: Updated:

A Lowndes County Superior Court judge has ordered authorities to release all surveillance video associated with the death investigation of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson, the Valdosta teenager whose body was found inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school gym back in January.

The surveillance video was previously reviewed by investigators who ruled Johnson's death as a freak accident, but only the portion of the footage with Johnson entering the gym was released. The rest of the footage was withheld.

Jim Elliott is the attorney for Sheriff Chris Prine who decided which portions of the footage to release and withhold. Elliott says Prine was trying to protect the privacy of minor students shown in the footage.

Johnson's parents believe someone killed him. His father says the release of the full footage will bring his family "one step closer to the truth."

Elliott says it's his understanding that the video does not show Johnson's death or the events leading to it.
