Fort Benning conducts controlled burn on first day of heavy weapons training

Posted: Updated:

In preparation for upcoming tree planting, the Directorate of Public Works is conducting a controlled/prescribed burn in the central area of Fort Benning today, Oct. 31.

Officials say the burn areas are small and will burn out quickly. Winds are predicted from the south and will keep smoke away from sensitive areas.

Prescribed burning helps prevent the occurrence of wildfires that can result from some military training activities. Firebreaks around impact areas are maintained annually to contain any wildfires that may be triggered by munitions.

Today's controlled burn coincides with the first day of Fort Benning's heavy weapons training schedule.
