BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

ALDOT is focusing on more changes to the intersection of Overton Road and Highway 280.

Officials say they saw an opportunity to make the intersection better for commuters so for 9 days, beginning Oct. 25, they've closed the intersection.

When residents of Shook Hills off of Overton Road had to make a left turn from Highway 280 to Overton Road, traffic was backing up. That's because residents have to make a second left to get home.

So ALDOT has decided to place a turn lane on Overton Road to help alleviate that congestion.

ALDOT is also widening lanes at Cherokee Road and Highway 280 to make a U-turn there much smoother for drivers.

They hope to have the Overton Road intersection re-opened by Sunday.
