MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - It has been nearly one month since the death of Collierville contractor J.P. Shelley. Police say two teenagers robbed him, then fired a single shot, killing the father and husband.

Cameras were not allowed inside the juvenile courtroom, but Action News 5's Lindsey Brown was able to watch as the suspects stood side by side in front of a judge Friday afternoon.

Derek Cunningham, 15, and Corey Sandifer, 15, are suspected of carrying out the robbery. Terrell Johnson, 17, is accused of receiving $40 and a cell phone to be the getaway driver.

The victim's widow, Beverly Shelley, was not in court as future hearing dates were set.

The prosecution wants the suspects, who are being housed here at juvenile court, to be charged as adults. The three were in the court room at the same time. All were quiet and looking straight ahead.

"If all the remedies for rehabilitation haven't been exhausted then our argument is going to be that this court ought to retain jurisdiction and get these boys rehabilitated," said Cunningham's defense attorney, James Sanders.

Rehabilitation would mean the teens would not be charged as adults. That decision will be made separately for each suspect based on their alleged role in the crime and their backgrounds.

Family members for the suspects were in court, but none of them wanted to talk with the media.

Hearings are set for November 20 and again on December 4. That is when a final decision will be made whether to transfer the suspects to adult court.
