HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The downtown Holiday Inn, next to the Von Braun Center, will be closed in early December and the property, owned by the City of Huntsville, will be redeveloped.

"This facility has been an important asset to our downtown for many years," said John Stallworth, Big Spring Partners, Inc.'s board chairman. "We are pleased that this site will continue to serve downtown as a key redevelopment site for years to come."

The city will start accepting requests for proposals for the property this spring and city leaders are already sharing ideas for what they would like to see on the property.

"This is a phenomenal location in our downtown area," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "As we reposition this property, we want to see proposals that will bring excitement to our community and bring even more energy to downtown."

Chad Emerson, CEO of Downtown Huntsville, Inc., said he believes exciting opportunities will come out of this due to the site's key location.

"It's bittersweet in some ways that an old hotel has moved on, but we're really excited about the new development that's going to be an opportunity to turn Downtown Huntsville into an even better place than it already is," said Emerson.

Downtown Huntsville Inc. is asking citizens to share their ideas on what they would like to see at the property.

Residents can share their ideas and get updates on what's happening downtown by visiting their website.

The Holiday Inn will close Dec. 15. Employees were notified of the plans on Friday. City officials said they are working with the Chamber of Commerce to host job fairs in order to help them find work.
