More women carrying guns, study shows

(WTVM) - There's a noticeable change at the gun range as more women have turned away from pepper spray and are now packing heat.

Statistics show the number of female gun owners is on the rise.

In the most recent Gallup poll, the percentage of ladies reporting gun ownership was at a new high, registering at 43 percent in 2011.

Michelle Harvard, owner of Greens Guns and Range, says women just want to feel safer and provide security for their families.

"One lady had came in to purchase a handgun because she had somebody kick down her door in the middle of the night, she lives right next to the police station and it still took them 30 minutes to respond," said Harvard.

But owning a gun is just the first step---learning how to use the deadly weapon, takes practice.

Also, if you are a mother or father with a weapon, be sure to keep it somewhere safe in your home and away from children.
