I-29 near Platte City back open after multi-vehicle crash

PLATTE CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A stretch of Interstate 29 just north of Platte City is back open after a multiple-vehicle crash.

The chain-reaction crash happened about 5:40 p.m. Monday near mile marker 23. The crash closed I-29 until 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Two semis were involved along with four passenger vehicles, Missouri Highway Patrol officials said. One person suffered life-threatening injuries. Other less serious injuries were reported.

Seatbelts are believed to have saved some lives.

Almost three hours after the crash, dozens of drivers stuck just south of the crash were being allowed to turn around and travel south on the northbound lanes to the nearest exit. Traffic was backed up for three miles.

A semi apparently hit a passenger vehicle, causing the chain-reaction crash.
