KY student withdraws from track competition over race number: 666

Posted: Updated:

A Kentucky high school student says it would have gone against her religious beliefs to run with the race number 666.

Whitley County High School cross country coach Gina Croley knows her students, so when she pulled the number 666 assigned to junior Codie Thacker she didn't think she would wear it because of her faith.

So she and her coach tried to get a different number. They asked three different officials, but were told no each time.

"I told them to mark out my name because it makes me sick just thinking that my name is associated with that number," said Codie.

If Thacker had run and won the regional it would have been her first time competing for a state championship.

A spokesperson with Kentucky High School Athletic Association says no one told them the request was because of religious beliefs, and that if they knew, they would have changed the number.
