TALBOT COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

A dog named Champ wandered around his house on Smith Hill Road in Talbotton looking for his owner, but she is gone forever.  The body of Ethelta Owens, 44, was taken away in a coroner's van this afternoon. Besides being a mother to Champ, she also has four children.  Friends at the scene said they're devastated.

Catherine Trice said, "We've been knowing her for years.  And it's just so hurtful to hear some news like this."

"She always wanted her own beauty salon, so she got that and she moved," said long time friend, Shirley Malcolm.

Originally from Atlanta, Owens came to Talbotton to open Visionz of U Hair Studio next to Big Chic. The first sign of trouble came when she didn't open up the salon this morning or answer her phone. Friends and co-workers went to check on her.

"We came here to the house, banging on the door and stuff, and she wouldn't come to the door.   So we went around to the back, and tried to see if could we look through, so we looked through the kitchen window and we could see her in the living room laying down," said Malcolm.

They called 911. Sheriff's deputies responded, and after taking a look inside, they decided the situation called for forensic investigation.

"Anytime we have a situation where we have any doubt, we ask the GBI to come in and assist, and that's what we've done."  said chief investigator, Guy Grimsley.

Authorities wouldn't go into detail about what they saw, but the coroner could tell right away that this was not due to natural causes.   Friends who were with Owens this past weekend are hoping to get some answers soon.

"I was in her shop on Saturday, she did my hair Saturday.   She was in a good mood.   A good spirit.   We were laughing and talking at the shop and she was doing fine," said Trice.
