SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Police have arrested three California men they believe came to Arizona to rob a coin store and made bomb threats to two Scottsdale schools to divert cops.

Police were placed on a higher alert Tuesday for both schools after a caller, using a digitally altered voice, said there was a bomb at Chaparral and at Desert Mountain high schools.

An unattended backpack found in a bathroom at Desert Mountain High School triggered a lockdown, Scottsdale police said.

A similar situation occurred at Chaparral High School, but that campus did not go on lockdown, officers said.

Telephone records led detectives to a coin store at 7569 E. Main St. in Scottsdale. They found three men outside the store and when they searched their vehicle they found a pre-paid phone used to call in the threats and a handgun.

Police said the men have no link to the schools or the city of Scottsdale, but that they came into down for the purpose of committing the crimes. Police believe the men called in the threats to lure police away from the downtown area so the suspect could rob the coin store.

The suspects, Daniel Alberto Verdin, Davyd G. Jimenez and Sanches Moises Ortiz are facing felony charges of disruption of a school, conspiracy and false reporting.
