Alcohol called issue facing next Farmington chief

Posted: Updated:
FARMINGTON, NM (AP) -

A document prepared for Farmington's search for a new police chief lists alcohol and its use by Navajos as among top concerns facing the city's eventual choice.

The Daily Times reports the document cites the frequency of drunk driving and public intoxication and notes that the nearby Navajo reservation is "dry."

Executive Director Leonard Gorman of the Navajo Human Rights Commission says the document's language is insensitive and doesn't mention benefits that Farmington gets from Navajo spending.

City Manager Rob Mayes says the document prepared by a consulting firm helping the city pick a new chief is an attempt to be transparent in describing the issues the next chief will face.

Mayes says the document isn't intended to describe the entire the relationship between Farmington and the Navajo Nation.
