Thief caught on camera steals donations, pays for gas

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Donations earmarked to help an employee's sick daughter were stolen from the counter at an AM/PM gas station in Mesa, but the thief was caught on camera.

Jean Levine says her daughter is sick and has to use a wheelchair to get around but her daughter's home does not have a wheelchair ramp.

"I want her to have help and if I have to get another job to help her and give her what she needs, I will do it," Levine said.

Levine and her co-workers set up a donation jar at the front counter. They don't know how much money had been raised because before they could count it, a man swiped it from the counter and drove away.

Video from security cameras shows a man walk into the Mesa convenience store and hide a jar full of donations in his clothing. The store doesn't know how much money was in the jar and the thief still paid the clerk for gas.

"It's wrong," Levine said. "The [donors] are trying to help."

Levine fears the same thief could strike again. She says he not only robbed the store of donations for her family but he also stole hope.

"She's my daughter, she's my only child I have," Levine said. "I don't want to see [theft] happen, I don't."
