Man sentenced in Phoenix boxer's death

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A judge sentenced Joseph Jesse Corrales to 18 years in prison as part of a plea deal in the beating death of a teenage boxer.

Corrales pleaded to one count of second-degree murder in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Corrales and Robert Chavez were arrested in November 2013 in connection with the beating death of 17-year-old Alexis Urbina-Ochoa and originally charged with first-degree murder, second-degree burglary and trafficking in stolen property.

At the time of the arrests, Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said investigators were tipped off to the pair because they were selling items that were stolen from the home during the crime back in September 2013.

Police worked leads since the badly beaten body of Urbina-Ochoa was found in his home two months before the arrests. The Amateur boxer had recently won a USA Youth Boxing National title.

Crump said Corrales and Chavez were gang members and had no prior ties to the young victim.
