Man wounded after trying to hit Arizona deputy

WITTMANN, AZ (AP/CBS5) -

A Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a man after the man tried to hit the deputy with his car.

Sheriff's spokesman officer Christopher Hegstrom said the deputy stopped a vehicle early Saturday near 213th Avenue and Patton Road for a traffic violation.

When the deputy asked the driver to step out of his vehicle, Hegstrom said the driver allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and attempted to hit the deputy.

The deputy fired his weapon, hitting the man. Hegstrom said the suspect was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy was not injured.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, will be booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail upon his release from the hospital.
