MIDLAND, GA (WTVM) - On Nov. 15, 2013, the Department of Driver Services (DDS) and Columbus Health Department are partnering for the grand opening of a new Birth Certificate Office Annex at DDS, located at 8397 Macon Road in Midland, Ga.
As part of the requirements of the Real ID Act of 2005, Georgia residents renewing their driver's licenses or ID cards must show a Georgia birth certificate as proof of personal identity and U.S. Citizenship unless they have a valid U.S. Passport.
The new birth certificate office provides a one stop convenience for customers needing to obtain a birth certificate for license renewal.
Before the Birth Certificate Annex Office opened, those arriving at the DDS office without a birth certificate faced having to leave that location in Midland, GA and ride to downtown Columbus to the Main Health Department to obtain the document.
Now, residents can save a trip downtown and get their birth certificate right outside the DDS Office.
"We recognized a need for greater accessibility for this service and decided with DDS to open this annex in an effort to better serve the people of our community," says the Columbus Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Beverley Townsend. "The Columbus Health Department is working together with DDS to provide better customer service and wants to make the Georgia public aware of this new convenience."
When asked about the new partnership, Department of Driver Services (DDS) Commissioner Rob Mikell stated "I appreciate the help and support that we have received from the Columbus Health Department team on establishing this model service. The principle mission of DDS is to always improve customer service and this partnership serves that mission well."
The new birth certificate annex, available to Columbus and surrounding counties, is conveniently located alongside the DDS building and is for purchasing Georgia birth certificates only.
The Annex hours are Tuesday – Friday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
