Did you know that food stamp enrollments remained at a record high 47 million people for the last 13 consecutive months?
It's a staggering statistic. The number is so large it seems overwhelming. But quite simply the numbers mean one thing: too many families are hungry for help.
Luckily there is "Feeding the Valley," which distributes 500,000 pounds of food every month to 220 agencies in Georgia and east Alabama.
St. Anne's Outreach is one of them. Katie Byers, the executive director of St. Anne's, says there is a 28 percent increase this year in the number of hungry families they help.
So at this time of year when our thoughts turn to family and thanks for all we have, you can be a hero for the hungry.
News Leader 9 and Feeding the Valley are partners in a food drive kicking off this week. It's called "Share Your Thanks-By-Giving," and with help from sponsors Publix and Headquarter Nissan, you can donate canned goods and boxed food items to the needy.
So, if you're shopping, look for two-for-one' specials and drop the extra item in the collection bins at Publix, Headquarter Nissan or here at the station. Then, Feeding the Valley will distribute your generosity among local food banks.
It's easy and inexpensive for most of us to lend a helping hand to neighbors we might not even know are struggling. And as we celebrate another Thanksgiving, we will know we all 'shared our thanks---by giving.'
