BGSU: Case of the missing mascot

Posted: Updated:
BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

You might call this the case of the pilfered peregrine.

The mascot at Bowling Green State University is the falcon. One on campus has mysteriously disappeared.

Don't worry. We found Freddie and Frieda OK Friday night, safely inside Stroh Arena where fans came to watch the women's basketball team.

But somebody lacking in falcon pride has committed a crime that's stunning students.

"It's pretty crazy," said Nicole Provonsil.

At the Life Sciences Building is the BGSU ornithology collection of more than 2,400 stuffed birds inside locked cases. Guess which one is missing?

The falcon.

"It's really tough to get in. Somebody really had to want to do this," said Dr. Jeff Minor of the Biological Sciences Department.

The falcon flew the coop sometime this week.

If you have it, professors want you to give them the bird - no questions asked. It and thousands of others are used during show and tell portions of ornithology classes.

"And they're very rare, so you're not allowed to go out and get examples for teaching. We need it. We want it," said Dr. Minor.

This is a crime some say is strictly for the birds.
