A 36-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after leading deputies on an extensive chase through north Jefferson County.

The suspect has been identified as Jason Robert Crocker from north Jefferson County.

The incident began around 8:15 a.m. when a deputy tried to pull over a white Lexus on Highway 79 near the Blount County line.

Deputies said Crocker pulled over on the opposite side of the road, but then fled while the deputy was waiting for the traffic to clear. A pursuit ensued for two miles heading south on Highway 79, but the deputy lost sight of the Lexus. Another deputy picked up the chase after spotting the suspect's vehicle on Sharon Church Road.

According to Chief Deputy Randy Christian with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Crocker tried to run over the deputy as he was getting out of his patrol car. The deputy fired a shot, but no one was hit.

The chase continued north on Highway 79 and deputies tried to stop Crocker by deploying spike strips. The driver avoided the spikes and the chase turned south again on Highway 79, going through Pinson and Clay.

The chase finally ended on Old Springville Road near Joni Circle, Christian said. No one was injured.

Crocker was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant out of Baldwin County for failure to appear on a charge of unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance with no bond.

He has now been charged with attempted murder, attempting to elude, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest for leading deputies on the chase today.

Crocker is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
