COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Both the givers and the receivers were in high spirits on Saturday morning, Nov. 23, as the Stepping Stones Ministry at Holsey Chapel C.M.E. Church gave away free turkeys to families in need this holiday season.

The doors opened at 8 a.m. for tickets, all of which had been given away by the time they started handing out the turkeys at 10 a.m. Hundreds waited in line, and once it started moving, the turkeys were all gone within minutes. They were distributed one per family.

Jamie Capers, Pastor of Holsey Chapel C.M.E. Church, says they handed out 120 turkeys last year, and this morning, they gave out a total of 155 turkeys, all donated by members and friends of the Holsey Chapel congregation.

"It reminds us that in community we are all one," says Capers. "We have to always remember that because God has been good to us and blessed us, that we are able to be a blessing to someone else."

When the last turkey was handed out, the volunteers burst into cheer, and then a spontaneous praise song as if they were just as grateful to give as the others had been to receive.

This was the second year the church has given away turkeys the weekend before Thanksgiving. They plan to continue the tradition with hopes of giving out as many turkeys as possible each year.
