PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 45-year-old Phoenix woman who was burned in an early morning apartment fire died Monday morning.

Teresea Parkmon was taken to the Maricopa County Medical Center's burn unit in extremely critical condition after she was found unconscious in her bed about 3:15 a.m. She died a short time later, said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.

Firefighters arrived to smoke billowing from the ground floor of the woman's two-story apartment near 11th and Southern avenues and found the victim in her bedroom on the second floor, said Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries as they brought the woman, who was about 40 years old, down the stairs for treatment and to be taken to the burn center. The firefighter was evaluated as a precaution.

Saavedra said the apartment's smoke detectors were properly functioning when firefighters arrived and that firefighters didn't know why the woman didn't respond to the alarms.

No other apartment was damaged, but an adjacent unit was evacuated as a precaution. The tenants were allowed to return.

Fire investigators were still trying to determine the cause.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, Holmes said.

He said Phoenix police and fire were conducting the joint investigation.
