PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Lake patrol deputies with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office issued 90 citations and removed 15 boaters from waterways during a special weekend of enforcement last summer.

MCSO's lake patrol division took part in a national effort June 28 through June 30 to cut the number of accidents and fatalities related to boating under the influence.

During the Operation Dry Water weekend, 16 MCSO lake patrol deputies made contact with 450 recreational boaters, raising awareness about the dangers of drunk boating.

Deputies also issued 112 safety warnings.

Across the nation, 6,219 law enforcement officers from 513 local, state and federal agencies joined forces for this year's campaign.

MCSO said alcohol continues to be the leading contributing factor in recreational boating deaths in the U.S.

Since the launch of Operation Dry Water in 2009, the amount of boating fatalities with alcohol named as a contributing factor has decreased from 19 percent to 17 percent across the nation, MCSO said.
