(WTVM) - December 1 is World AIDS Day, an international health day that's dedicated to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.
The day is important because not only does it raise awareness about the disease, but it also is meant to reduce the stigma of having HIV or AIDS.
The disease is only about 30 or 40 years old, but there have been many clinical advancements for treating it. However, there is still more education and awareness to be made about the disease.
HIV and AIDS can be transmitted multiple ways: sexual contact, sharing needles, pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding, or through a blood transfusion.
Remember the ABCs of prevention: Abstinence, Be faithful to your partner, and use Condoms.
It is also important to know how the disease cannot be transmitted: shaking hands, hugging a person with HIV or AIDS, by using a public restroom, pool, or Jacuzzi, sharing a drink, mosquito bites, or coughing or sneezing.
