STEELE, MO (KFVS) -

Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield reports that on Monday, November 26, Steele police and Pemiscot County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home on North Walnut Street in reference to a man being held hostage.

William Erwin, 31, from Blytheville, Ark, is charged with assault first degree - serious physical injury and armed criminal action.

Steele officers and deputies arrived on scene and saw someone walking away from the home, Chief Stanfield said officers arrested the man. He was later identified as Erwin.

According to Chief Stanfield, officers found a 48-year-old man inside the home bleeding profusely from cuts on his head. The man was taken by ambulance to a Pemiscot hospital to be treated for a severe head injury.

During the investigation, Chief Stanfield said it was discovered that William Erwin had entered the victim's home armed with a handgun demanding money. He said Erwin then began hitting the victim with the gun.

During the attack, Stanfield said Erwin dropped the handgun and picked up a claw hammer and hit the victim with the hammer.

Steele officers and deputies processed the crime scene and recovered the loaded handgun and hammer allegedly used by Erwin during the attack.

Erwin was taken to the Steele Police Department where he was interviewed by Chief Stanfield. Erwin confessed to Stanfield, saying while armed with a handgun he did attack the victim, causing serious injuries.

Steele police filed charges with Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney and a warrant was issued for Erwin. He is currently being held at the Pemiscot County Jail with no bond.
