DriveMeKC offers free ride home to Thanksgiving Eve revelers

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Thanksgiving Eve is one of the busiest bar nights of the year, and a local pastor is doing his part to get revelers home safe and sound.

Bars and pubs are stocking up on booze with throngs expected Wednesday night. One theory is college students who are home for the first time in weeks are eager to catch up with friends who they haven't seen in some time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration considers the Thanksgiving holiday second only to New Year's Eve for alcohol-related crashes.

The Rev. Scott Patschke has started a designated driving service called DriveMeKC. It works by a driver giving you a ride home in your own vehicle with a second team member following to then pick up the designated driver at the person's destination.

"I see the pain in my normal profession all the time and this is a way to help out the community, keep people safe and provide a service," Patschke said. "I feel like this is a more responsible plan than handing your friend your keys."

He's giving free rides on Thanksgiving Eve thanks to a grant from Jim Beam.

Providing the service is quite personal to Patschke.

"A very good friend of ours, a young man, he was 16 years old, decided to get, pardon me, stupid, one night and drank too much. He got killed and hurt his best friend really badly," he recalled. "And that's always been something that's been with me for many years."
