Tigers top Tennessee State to move to 4-1

AUBURN, Ala. – Chris Denson scored 17 points, all in the second half, to lead four double-digit scorers as Auburn knocked off Tennessee State 78-73 on Tuesday in Auburn Arena.

Auburn (4-1) saw its lead slip to just two points with 40 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by Tennessee State's Jaquan Nobles, but the Tigers responded with some timely free throw shooting in the final 35 seconds to hold on for the victory.

Led by a 9-of-10 night at the foul line by Denson, Auburn hit a season high 30-of-37 free throws (81.1 percent) to overcome a strong shooting night by TSU (0-7). Tennessee State shot 56.5 percent (26-of-46) and hit 9-of-20 3-point attempts (45 percent).

Tahj Shamsid-Deen chipped in with a career-best 16 points, primarily in the first half as Denson and KT Harrell (14 points) sat due to foul trouble. Allen Payne added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.

Nobles led TSU with 22 points, including 6-of-9 from outside. Kennedy Eubanks and Patrick Miller each scored 17 points.

Auburn is in action next on Monday when it travels to Iowa State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
