CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Downtown business owners make a big push this year to get shoppers to think outside the box store and head towards the river in Cape Girardeau.

"This is the first year we are really excited about Black Friday and the following weekend, "said Tina Abbot of Cup n' Cork.

They are doing it as a team effort starting Black Friday and continuing on to Small Business Saturday.

"Remember when you shop local, you're helping yourself, your landlords, your community economy over all," said Claire Bruce of Sloan + Themis, a vintage inspired jewelry store.

To help drive people in, many stores are offering deals and they are taking a team approach.

Shopping one or both days can earn shoppers multiple chances to win gift baskets worth more than $500 each from local shops. Items include everything from pearl earrings and necklaces to antiques, paintings, apparel, a photo session and more.

It works by spending a minimum amount in each shop to get a chance in the drawing. They will start this incentive on Friday and fresh again on Saturday.

"To win again Saturday you have to come back down," said Abbot.

Stores involved include most downtown retailers like Jason's Jewelers, Judith Ann's, Somewhere in Time, Renaissance, Cup n' Cork, The Artists Studio, Bella Bambino, Annie Em's, Stash, Sloan + Themis, and Pastimes.

"We just keep adding to the list," said Abbot. "We know if we work together what's good for one of us is good for all of us," said Abbot. "If one store is full all of our shops and businesses can be full."

"We will open a little later and offer a different kind of experience," said Paula Haas.

"Sleep in, come downtown Friday, and find something unique," said Bruce. "Then of course we will offer more discounts and incentives to shop Saturday."
