KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV/AP) -

Actor and comedian Rob Riggle will flip the switch that lights up Kansas City's Country Club Plaza on Thanksgiving night.

The annual event attracts tens of thousands of people to the upscale shopping and dining district, where several blocks of buildings will be outlined in holiday lights through Jan. 12.

A local celebrity gets the honor each year of flipping the switch with help from a child chosen at random from the crowd.

Riggle grew up in Overland Park and graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School and the University of Kansas.

Musical performances and fireworks will also be part of Thursday night's festivities.

On Thanksgiving, from 4-11 p.m., Main Street MAX Orange Line will offer more frequent service for the lighting ceremony. Buses will operate about every 15 minutes, instead of every 30 minutes.

Buses on 15-minute frequency:

  • Begins at 4:11 p.m. from 74th Terrace and Broadway.
  • Begins at 3:54 p.m. from Third Street and Grand Park-and-Ride.
  • Last northbound bus leaves the Plaza at 10:55 p.m.
  • Last southbound bus leaves the Plaza at 11:19 p.m.

Before and after these times the rest of the day, MAX will operate its holiday schedule, which is every 30 minutes.

The last regularly scheduled northbound bus leaves the Plaza at 12:10 a.m. and the last regularly scheduled southbound bus leaves the Plaza at 11:34 p.m.
