MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Family, neighbors and fire investigators are trying to make sense of what happened and what led to a deadly Memphis house fire early Thanksgiving morning.

Firefighters say the damage estimate is about $10,000 for a house on Orchi Road in the Nutbush community.

Wendy Zuniga used to live near the corner of Berkshire Avenue and Orchi. She still keeps in touch with the old neighborhood and was not expecting such a desvastating loss.

"I'm kinda shocked. I mean she just moved in before I moved out. I mean, she was really nice," said Zuniga.

A 55-year-old woman is now dead after her home went up in flames. Memphis firefighters say they got the call at 10:47 p.m.

"Found the house on fire. Report of a victim inside. There was one occupant of the house that was already out and was able to direct us to the part of the house he thought the victim was in," said Memphis Fire Department chief Phillip Dix.

Dix says crews made an "aggressive interior attack" and found the woman still inside. Paramedics rushed her to The MED, where she soon died.

"I pray for the family," said Zuniga. "I mean I just can't believe that this would happen to somebody, especially on a day like this. It's Thanksgiving, you know."

The cause is unknown, but MFD said they launch an investigation to figure out how the fire started and why someone is dead in the aftermath.

Firefighters say the man who got out of the house was also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He is expected to be OK.
