Arizona Snowbowl ski resort set to close Sunday

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Arizona Snowbowl resort north of Flagstaff is set to close for the season on Sunday.

Snowbowl officials said even with record-breaking drought conditions, the ski resort offered a full, 122-day season.

The resort opened a little early this year thanks to new snowmaking equipment. It was installed last year after a legal battle with Indian tribes that consider the San Francisco Peaks sacred.

Snowbowl officials said the snowmaking machines could not have come at a better time.

They report the resort averages 260 inches of natural snow each year, but only had about 100 inches of natural snow this season, so the equipment was able to keep them in business and their roughly 500 employees working.

The slopes will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and until 6 p.m. on Friday. An adult all-day lift ticket costs $59.

Snowbowl's summer season starts Memorial Day weekend with chairlift rides, disc golf, as well as hiking and biking trails.

Arizona Snowbowl is 14 miles outside of Flagstaff.
