OVERTIME: Can the Lancers CDO?

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Not since Canyon del Oro High School in 1977-78 has a Tucson-area high school won a state championship in both football and boys basketball.

Salpointe Catholic officially began that journey this week when several members of the Division II state champion football team joined up with their basketball counterparts for what they hope is a return trip to the hoops title affair.

The Lancers got to the pinnacle last season but lost to Phoenix Paradise Valley 45-39 in the state championship game.

Cameron Denson who led the football team to the promised land Friday night scored 11 points and sparked a late second quarter run to help lead the Lancers to a 53-43 win Wednesday night over feisty Rio Rico.

Working on just one-day of practice both Denson and Jaylyn Juan played significant minutes in back-to-back wins over Seton Catholic and Rio Rico.

Thomas McEvoy scored both inside and outside to lead the Lancers with 20. Hunter Lowry also scored 11.

Aaron Fanning led Rio Rico with seven of his 16 points in the first quarter as the Hawks led 20-15 at the end of one.

The Dorados actually won the coveted "Boys Double" in football and basketball in back-to-back years. CDO Football (9-1-1) took the 4A state title in 1977 beating Gilbert 9-7 while the hoops team (21-4) knocked of Nogales 59-56 that winter to also stake claim to 4A.

The Dorados had also won both the year prior in 1976-78

Nine years earlier Marana accomplished the feat.

Don Hawkins' 1968 Tigers (11-0) won the 1968 2A state football championship beating Round Valley 21-6. The school boys basketball team led by Norm Patton then won the first of his three state titles also going undefeated (24-0) and knocking of Parker 86-67.

St. David is the last Southern Arizona school to win both football and boys basketball in the same year. The Tigers took both 1A titles in 2001-02. They also did it in the 1997-98 school year.

Globe is the last Arizona school period to win the "Boys Double" in 2002-03. In all our research show the feat  has been done 16 times by 12 schools since the AIA went into effect in 1960 with CDO and St. David having done it twice each and Pima winning it three times.
